Here's a quote from the Exchange 2000 Performance Tuning Guide, compiled
by Paul Bowden:

"A common question is "Can I run Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server on
Windows 2000 Server (i.e. Standard Edition)?"
Technically, this configuration will work, but you should avoid it. For
example, most customers will use Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server because
they want to take advantage of multiple databases. However, because
Windows 2000 Server does not support the /3GB tuning switch, you will
not be able to scale your Exchange server. Indeed, as you add databases
and users to this server, virtual memory will be constrained, even if
you have plenty of physical memory. At best, the performance will be
bad. In some situations, the server may run into critical virtual memory
problems and errors will occur. If you plan to have 1Gb or more of
physical memory in your Exchange 2000 server, it is highly recommended
that you use Windows 2000 Advanced Server."

I've had a running debate on this in the past with others on this list.
I maintain that KB266096 says (in effect) that you SHOULD NOT have more
than 1GB in an E2K/W2K standard server.

Others on this list (who are admittedly smarter than I am) argue
otherwise.

But, I think the inference is pretty obvious:

1. If you have more than 1GB memory, you must add the "/3GB" switch.
2. In order to add the "/3GB" switch you must be running W2K advanced.
3. Therefore, if you don't have W2K advanced, you can't add the "/3GB"
switch, which in turn means you can't have more than 1GB memory.

He said he's using Win2k Server, not Advanced Server, so he shouldn't
use the /3GB option.

Have you added the /3GB /mbr to the boot ini file so when it starts up
it will see the 3 gig of ram ?

Take out the memory you have added. I am serious.

Keep getting 9582 MSExchangeIS Event Log entry with this text:

The virtual memory necessary to run your Exchange server is fragmented
in such a way that normal operation may begin to fail. It is highly
recommended that you restart all Exchange services to correct this
issue.

Rebooting doesn't help. Any advice? (We recently added 2 GB RAM for a
total of 3 GB.) E2K Enterprise on Win2K Server.

TIA
Orin Rehorst
