We have been plagued with this issue for years. The first solution we were given by MS was to move from Standard to Advanced server, but this only delayed the weekly appearance of the errors (we reboot the mailbox servers weekly to keep this problem in check). One thing we HAVE noticed is that MAPI connections and/or mailbox size MAY have an impact on the errors. We have servers with 8000+ smaller mailboxes (20M limit, average size of about 5M) that never have the problem but also have accounts that are rarely accessed via MAPI. We have identical boxes with 3,000 larger mailboxes (100M limit with exceptions, average size of 50M) that are almost always accessed using MAPI that almost always have this error logged within 1-5 days of a reboot.
MS has recently made KB325044 publicly available... up to a few weeks ago it was an uber-secret internal-only piece. It can be found here http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;325044. Lots of good things there, but to date no success fixing out problems. We are currently working with MS to resolve this, and if I get any tips not in this article, I will be sure to pass them on. Oh, our standard mailbox servers are diskless, dual-processor boxes with 2G of RAM and a fiberchannel-connected SAN for storage. FWIW, the amount of RAM in the servers seems to have had no effect on appearance the error or associated probems. Technically, this configuration will work, but you should avoid it. For example, most customers will use Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server because they want to take advantage of multiple databases. However, because Windows 2000 Server does not support the /3GB tuning switch, you will not be able to scale your Exchange server. Indeed, as you add databases and users to this server, virtual memory will be constrained, even if you have plenty of physical memory. At best, the performance will be bad. In some situations, the server may run into critical virtual memory problems and errors will occur. If you plan to have 1Gb or more of physical memory in your Exchange 2000 server, it is highly recommended that you use Windows 2000 Advanced Server." -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Ken Cornetet Posted At: 19 July 2004 16:10 Posted To: Swynk Exchange (30 days) Conversation: virtual memory fragmented Subject: RE: virtual memory fragmented I've had a running debate on this in the past with others on this list. I maintain that KB266096 says (in effect) that you SHOULD NOT have more than 1GB in an E2K/W2K standard server. Others on this list (who are admittedly smarter than I am) argue otherwise. But, I think the inference is pretty obvious: 1. If you have more than 1GB memory, you must add the "/3GB" switch. 2. In order to add the "/3GB" switch you must be running W2K advanced. 3. Therefore, if you don't have W2K advanced, you can't add the "/3GB" switch, which in turn means you can't have more than 1GB memory. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Neil Hobson Sent: Monday, July 19, 2004 9:52 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: virtual memory fragmented He said he's using Win2k Server, not Advanced Server, so he shouldn't use the /3GB option. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Pitt, Jeffrey Posted At: 19 July 2004 15:38 Posted To: Swynk Exchange (30 days) Conversation: virtual memory fragmented Subject: RE: virtual memory fragmented Have you added the /3GB /mbr to the boot ini file so when it starts up it will see the 3 gig of ram ? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Fyodorov, Andrey FTL Sent: Monday, July 19, 2004 10:23 AM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: virtual memory fragmented Take out the memory you have added.
