AdAware is what I use; spybot is also good. 

I also raise the security level for the internet zone to high (blocks
activex). If there is a site which I need which relies on activex or
javascript, and I fully trust them, I will add them to the Trusted Sites
zone. This is not failsafe, though, since IE zoning is basically broken -
there are a few known ways to bypass it through leveraging multiple
partially fixed vulnerabilities, and there are new ways every month it
seems.

Ultimately, most of this stuff comes in through IE issues, so using Mozilla
instead minimizes your exposure.
