AdAware is what I use; spybot is also good. I also raise the security level for the internet zone to high (blocks activex). If there is a site which I need which relies on activex or javascript, and I fully trust them, I will add them to the Trusted Sites zone. This is not failsafe, though, since IE zoning is basically broken - there are a few known ways to bypass it through leveraging multiple partially fixed vulnerabilities, and there are new ways every month it seems.
