There is a KB article on how to manually remove an Exchange server from AD.
Basically it involves some manual labor, cleaning the residue from AD with
the help of ADSI Edit

Subject: removing Exchange server from org

Let's say I have an exchange server, in an all windows 2000/exchange 2000
exchange org. This server fails completely and is rebuilt as a new server.

The old server still shows in the ESM.
How would I resolve this?
(Moving/recovering mailboxes are not an issue, there are no mailboxes on the
failed server)

If the new/rebuilt server has the same name will it replace the old, or is
there a way, other than uninstalling exchange to remove the old server from
the org
