If it's only one port, then yes. Because if it's a VPN, and a remote notebook user downloads something that infects his system, it has access to my entire network! With a port open, you only need to worry about attacks on that particular service, even if your remote user is infected. Better yet would be that one port with IPSec, which I may end up doing.
I've decided that VPNs are so complex and prone to problems that I'm only going to use them to connect networks over the internet.
