What about doing a netstat -s to look at protocol statistics. You can be a
bajillion packet retries (when the packets have payloads) and still see ICMP
messages go through without a hitch. Messed up MTU values can cause
problems on the client and the switch the client is connected to.

Is the user plugged into a managed switch that any sort of diagnostic
capability? You could also try setting the user and the switch port to 10
Meg Half-duplex and see if that cleans up your packet statistics.

No dropped packets. He's at 100Mbps. I thought about sending him a NIC to
replace the built-in. I believe he's using a Dell Optiplex GX1xx with
built-in 3com nic. However, we're using several of those elsewhere in the
WAN and have no issues with them.

As for packet sniffing, I really don't have anything to do that with. As for
the log entries, there's not been anything in the past. I'll have to look
and see now. Oh, and I was wrong about the ping times being 30ms... it's 20
ms. :-)

Checked the mail server logs and there was nothing really there as best I
could see... Will check the workstation logs and get back to you.

But what about packet loss? If you do a ping -t from his workstation to the
mail server and let it run for 50 or so, does it drop packets? Times aren't
as critical... Port speed and duplex mismatch are also things I look at...
I'd also set up a packet sniffer and look at his traffic and see what's
going on... Any relevant event log entries on either machine?
