1500 .dat messages is obviously indicative that something aint right :). Sounds as if the 5.5 server is having trouble connecting to the e2003 server. You may want to crank up logging on the MTA and run mtacheck as well.

The Exchange 5.5 server in the same site, which did *not* move, is still accepting requests for incoming mail, as the VMS gateway still forwards email directly there (I'll be changing that first week in January) and there are 1,530 objects in the mtadata directory - mostly 1K *.dat files. I see nothing suspicious in the event logs. I checked the hosts file - nothing but localhost there. Oh, and I did move the remaining 35 people from E5.5 last Thursday (a week ago), so there are essentially only one or two mailboxes left (just test stuff). Could somebody tell me what's going on?
