I have band-aided the problem that when it goes down, my monitoring server knows it and initiates pskill on the services and than restarts it. All is fine then. I want to know root cause, even though we will be migrating to e2k3 very soon.

I *thought* it was a result of having Outlook 2003/XP clients on the LAN, but that does not appear to be the case (I read a KB document awhile back that this could cause problems.) Fortunately, I have VPN access and can connect to the mail / OWA server and reboot it from remote, if necessary.
