no, more, how long from when you had never used backup exec until you felt very comfortable with it?

Eric Fretz wrote:

Get to the point where BackupExec only need tape changes? Only a few days.
We were a BackupExec 8.x shop before hand, but I chose to do a complete
remove and install when going to v9.1. I'm sure upgrading would have been
just as good, but I wanted to know EXACTLY what was getting backed up, what
accounts were being used, etc.... Building the new backup jobs accomplished
that.

The VS160 drives seem to run for about three months before they start going
offline for no reason. I've tried using Veritas drivers, microsoft drivers
and even Quantum supplied OEM drivers. Nothing changes. The only thing
that temporarily fixed the problem is bouncing the power on the tape drive.
Since the tape drives are inside of servers, resetting the drives can be a
perilous adventure. Dell swears there is nothing wrong with the Quantum
VS160 drive. I have a stack of RMA labels that argue otherwise.

How long did it take you to get to that point?

About the only time I spend working on my Veritas Backup Exec 9.1 boxes is when I forget to change tapes, or when the VS160 drives decide to die. I have replaced (4) VS160 drives in 6 months. Thank God for Dell's 4-hour parts support....

Yes, the logging is quite lame . . . but for a lean shop like mine the
person-hours that someone would have to dedicate to being an 'expert' at CA or Veritas, etc. the gains far outweigh the shortcomings.

My only complaint about NTBackup is the logging. I think it only keeps
last 10 logs in the Documents and Settings subdirectory which belongs to the account that NTBackup runs as.

I recently worked in an environment where we kept 3 fulls on disk at
all time using NTbackup like this (and used file backup software to put the backup files to tape). Each full was kept in its own folder: Good (1 day old), Bad (2 days old), Ugly (3 days old). We just scripted it so that after NTbackup did its thing we rotate the backups out and what was in Ugly goes to tape.

If you can afford to keep your Exchange fulls on disk and rotate them
like this, it speeds up recovery time quite a bit (being on gigabit ethernet helps as well).

Actually, if the historical data needed for the restore is still on disk it significantly decreases your restore time, as no tape is needed. I backup to disk on our SAN here, saving to separate daily files and only overwriting those files weekly. The disk backups are still written to tape daily, but doing it this way decreases your restore times in MOST instances, and lengthens your backup window since you can have your mail store being backed up to disk at the same time as other data is written to tape.

The only thing is it doubles your restore time and effort.

for Exchange NTBackup! Works like a charm . . .we use that for all Exchange servers and backup to a file and then pluck it off of a drive with our "Enterprise" backup software to tape.

I need some recommendations on Backup software. We are still running Arcserve 2000 for backup. I have been having some problem with the backup and try to call for support but they wanted $95 for then just to

tell me to upgrade. I am thinking about going with Backup Exec. Is this

one of the best out there?

Thank
Tony
