Well fudge. I would start with the basics again. Using a pix firewall by chance? How is the DNS setup again? Are DNS servers defined in the advanced properties of the VS? etc ... You'll probably have to deconstruct all that and piece by piece eliminate possibilities. Alternatively, call PSS and they will hang with you till they can figure it out.

By default, only anonymous access is checked. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Evan Mann Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 4:04 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Client not authenticated and relay access denied errors Defaults for relay: Allow all computers which successfully authenticate to relay Defaults for Auth: Anon allows, basic allowed, integrated windows auth allowed. And in reference to another post about http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;274638 I checked that article out, my auth/relay options are set correctly. I've had no IP changes to deal with ISA. The other sub links deal with Exchange 2000 service packs. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David, Andy Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 3:51 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Client not authenticated and relay access denied errors How about the outbound security settings on the VS? What are they set to? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Evan Mann Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 3:45 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Client not authenticated and relay access denied errors Mailboxes are on an Exchange 2003 backend server, which communicates to an Exchange 2003 Front End (on same VLAN). The front end does all inbound/outbound SMTP communications. There is an ISA 2000 box between the front end and the edge of my network. My ISP offers no filtering of any kind. The SMTP filter on ISA is disabled. I run Symantec Mail Security 4.5 on the backend and the frontend, but have had that in place since before this problem started to occur. -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of David, Andy Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 3:41 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: RE: Client not authenticated and relay access denied errors Hmmm, That was the classic error message in the 5.5 days when someone sent a message marked private! Do you have any gateways/relays or content filtering /encryption between you and the internet that may be causing havoc? -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Evan Mann Sent: Wednesday, February 09, 2005 2:18 PM To: Exchange Discussions Subject: Client not authenticated and relay access denied errors I am seeing the following errors frequently, These are errors when I try to send e-mail out. [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 2/9/2005 8:56 AM You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator. <MAIL.MAILSERVER.COM #5.7.1 smtp;550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for [EMAIL PROTECTED]> [EMAIL PROTECTED] on Fri, 14 Jan 2005 17:55:13 -0500 Unable to deliver the message because the originator prohibited redirection to an alternate recipient or the message was encrypted <MAIL.MAILSERVER.COM #5.7.3 smtp;505 5.7.3 Client was not authenticated> I get the first error to a wide variety of domains. Mail servers might be Postfix, Sendmail, Qmail, or Exchange. The second error I seem to get very infrequently, to one domain in particular, but I have seen it to tohers. With both errors, if you re-send the mail, it typically goes through just fine on the second try. I run Exchange 2003 and edited the registry key to supress XEXCH50 from being sent externally, AND I set SMTP to only use HELO instead of EHLO. Neither have helped. When I look at the SMTP Service logs, I see the communications look normal and these messages come back from the receiving mail server as a response to the RCPT TO: command. What gets me is that this started many months after we started using Exchange 2003. it >MAY< have occured once we upgraded to SP1, but I can't pinpoint that at all. I have proper forward/reverse DNS. This is not an issue with my users not being authenticated to the Exchange server. The users are connected directly via Outlook and there is nothing going on with a locked account or osmething funny like that. This clearly occurs during the SMTP communications process. I run one of the mail servers on the receiving end where I constantly get the relay access denied error. This is becoming a major nuissance for me and my users. I've seen various reports of this on the internet. Does anyone know what the heck is going on? _________________________________________________________________ List posting FAQ: http://www.swinc.com/resource/exch_faq.htm Web Interface: http://intm-dl.sparklist.com/read/?forum=exchange To subscribe: http://e-newsletters.internet.com/discussionlists.html/ To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Exchange List admin: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe via postal mail, please contact us at: Jupitermedia Corp.
