We use a few NASStor iSCSI tape backup systems. Not exactly hanging the private store off of an iSCSI device, but backup performance has been adaquate. For performance reasons, I allocated a separate core network switch for my iSCSI stuff. At the very least, using a separate VLAN on your core switch should do the trick.
