Actually, Exchange 5.5 released without an Exchange client; it coincided with Outlook 97. Exchange 5.0 was the last version to ship with a client. However, the Exchange 5.5 Beta included a beta Exchange 5.5 client that included dumpster capability.

Think about it this way -- if you didnt' have to buy a new copy of Outlook each time, Microsoft wouldn't be worth billions because they'd make one version of Office, and then when they came up with a new version, everyone would have a free upgrade, and I don't think M$ intends to give away free upgrades.
