Running the tests is an excellent idea, when coupled with a practice of your
disaster recovery skills, by running the tests on the databases you restored
to your recovery server. Then you can kill two birds with one stone without
downtime.

Subject: Offline maintenance= yes or no?

Dear list,

I've read from an online Microsoft training course and from Sams Exchange
Server 2003 unleashed that offline maintenance should be performed on
regular intervals. Perhaps quarterly or yearly, depending on the usage.
However, from a recent thread on the list (and from searching the web), I'm
hearing that it should not be done unless you have a lot of "white space,"
where the database will actually compact (i.e. a lot of deleted items.) Or
if problems are happening.

Again, from what I've read, the online defrag only does about 70-80% of the
maintenance job. So my feeling is that perhaps this maintenance should be
done yearly on a moderately busy Exchange server.

I've been advised to run isinteg.exe (i.e. isinteg.exe -s <ServerName> -test
allfoldertests) before running eseutil.exe--to test the store before the
defrag. Then to run eseutil.exe /g then /d. Is this advisable?

Would it ever be advisable to run these tests without then doing the actual
defrag, if the server is experiencing zero problems?

Basically what I want to know is if these maintenance practices should be
performed despite the fact that no noticeable database compaction will occur
afterwords.

Thanks for any advice and suggestions!

Julian
