Of course running OWA in a FE/BE setup with OWA in the DMZ is ideal.
Then the advantages of ISA are diminished.

However, for smaller organizations who wish to run OWA, ISA can act as
the intermediary and only allow pre-authenticated connections into the
OWA server. ISA pay's for itself by eliminating the need for a FE
Exchange server while achieving _close_ to the same level of security.

Indeed. We're running a plain ol' Exchange 2003 Front End Server in our
DMZ to do both OWA and RPC over HTTP(s). Our smart host is PMDF on
VMS/ALPHA with SOPHOS for virus scanning, PMAS for anti-spam, and
vFastScan to speed up the scanning - it loads all the virus defs in
memory.

And, no, I don't work for or get kickbacks from or even know anybody
personally who works for any of the above companies!
