Is the e-mail domain entered in your organization's default recipient policy? All need to be there. You don't have to select the checkbox unless you want addresses automatically assigned, but you need an entry in there.

All the users, computers, server and exchange have been moved to Domain2. 2003 domain, 2003 exchange. In a pre-test of decommissioning domain1 I shut down the two remaining DC's for that domain, just shut them off to see what would beak. The above unable to relay message is what I broke. Exchange was originally in domain1, the domain being shut down. Looking at the SMTP Virtual Server I see authenticated users for domain2, those unable to relay, as having submit permissions, but not relay permissions.
