YOU FOLKS ARE AWESOME!! My thanks go out to Mark, Candee, Chuck, Alan, and Ed, and any others I may miss. You nailed it and made my day a happy one. Using an Outlook 2002 SP3 client talking to an Exchange 5.5 SP4 server, the registry hack at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;178630&sd=tech worked like a charm. It required installing a registry entry, "DumpsterAlwaysOn", in a subkey. The Microsoft article was straight-forward and complete.
My user's Inbox has been fully restored (probably more email than she wanted)! We had plenty of time left on our 30 day retention policy. Although we run backups every night, and installed the registry hack after the delete had occurred, there was no consequence encountered. I was particularly pleased that the registry hack did not have to occur on the Exchange server, but was executed on an admin workstation. Thanks again all for sharing your expertise. Is there a way to recover email that has been shift deleted (permanently deleted)? We are running EX 5.5, latest SPs and hot fixes. The Deleted item retention time option is set for 30 days, but the permanently deleted items do not go there. Brick level (user mailboxes) backups are not used. Are there any other alternatives or must the server be restored with the latest backup (we only do full backups daily) to get the deleted emails? Your comments will be appreciated. Thank you.
