Not to minimize your plight, in this sense you're lucky--your users will
likely have fairly low expectations. Replyability is probably the least of
their concerns.

Nah, I don't think that's an issue. All appointments and calendars have
been thrown completely out of whack by our evacuation. Mainly they want
their emails for research and personal contacts. Unfortunately for us
admins, everyone uses email as a file cabinet and trash can. Not much we
can do about it (hence the large data stores).

We've actually now demo'd the Powercontrols 3rd party Exchange mailbox
extractor, and really like it. It does look like it might be more money
than the management is willing to spend. (Almost $7000.00 for the amount of
mailboxes we need it for.) We 'might' get away with less if the only
mailboxes they want restored is upper management, but we have purchased some
additional servers for our recovery site, and we plan on taking at least one
of them and doing the restore as described by Mr.
Crowley earlier.

Thanks again for all the help!

I don't think you create a recipient policy based upon the x500/DN, at least
you couldn't in E2000, IIRC.
Bulk modification with a script or admodify is probably required.

You could get around that by adding the old X.400 address to a repcient
policy right?

One thing possibly to bear in mind with Ed's suggestion is that the existing
calendar items from your old server will have the old x400/x500 (or
whatever) names. This would also be true of existing emails. When a person
replies to an existing internal email or changes an existing appointment
(that came from the PST) the reply email *may* have the old details in it
and it will not be sucessfully sent.
A minor thing to check , but with 1300 users, it could swamp the helpdesk
with "I can't send email/people an't getting my appintment updates"
The only solution is to get them to delete the exisitng appointments and
start from new. Fo the mail items - check addresses against the address
list.

Cheers
Dean

Thanks to everyone that replied. Ed, we had discussed exactly what you
proposed below, but thought there might be an idea we hadn't thought of
yet. Looks like we were on the right track though! We are currenly
requesting pricing on the 3rd party edb tools (wonder if the eval version is
timed or by mailbox...hmmm....)

Once again, thanks for the support and cheers to one of the greatest
discussion groups around.

It is likely easier to use the suggestions to buy a third-party tool.
Maybe they can offer you a Katrina discount. But you can accomplish what
you want to do without a tool.

I'm assuming you don't want to start over, right? If you haven't done so
already, just give everyone a new mailbox so that they can send and receive
new e-mail. Restore your domain to an off-line server, then install
Exchange with the /disasterrecovery switch, then do the restore.
Then you can use exmerge to merge the old data in with the new mailboxes by
copying the old data to PSTs, then merging those PSTs into the new
mailboxes.

Ok, I need some assistance here from the best of the best (with a well
meaning look at Ed...)

We are currently in a declared disaster mode from Hurricane Katrina. We
grabbed our backup tapes and ran to the North East to a recovery site.

We did a few things wrong at the start. The active directory backup was not
restored, and a new domain with the same name was built. (Blame no sleep or
documentation)

We have been creating email accounts and AD users from lists we had in our
SQL databases because getting communications via eMail to users that had
evacuated all over the country was top priority. We figured we could
restore the old mailboxes later. (Perhaps using exMerge) So we did a dial
tone build.

The exchange server (2003-SP1) was not named the same as the old Exchange
server, nor was the Administrative group.

Our NetBackup tapes are fine, we have no problems with restoring databases
to the Exchange server, it just won't mount them. (Complains about the
mis-named Administrative group)

We know that we can restore to a different server with the same Admin names
on the same Forest, (We have done that in the past to restore a mailbox),
but like I said, our old AD was not restored...

We have tried changing the Legacy DN with ADSI edit, but then the current
information store fails, so we have to set it back.

We may be going about this the wrong way totally, but we are against a wall,
and are appealing to the community for some assistance.

Oh, and please no flames about testing recovery plans. We are already
writing new ones with the full cooperation of the management (finally)

Not only has Katrina ruined our homes and our lives, but she is wrecking our
minds as well.

Any help would be appreciated.
