Take a look at www.xosoft.com their replication software allows exactly what
you want and it will allow you to replicate IS from one machine to the
other. Neither Legato nor (leaky, and try to get their support to answer
after 5 PM central) NSI do that.
We have been using it for the past two years by having 4 sites rather than
2. Had one failure due to California power outage but clients were able to
get to their mail boxes via OWA (those who had power at their houses!)

Yes, while the method of replicating stores in this fashion is
unsupported, plenty of people do it with great success (I am one of
them).
As for the original question with mounting the stores on the opposite
server, your vendor is largely correct, but the process can be
automated. I use Double-Take for my exchange replication and NSI
provides a custom failover app that does all the work necessary to take
your secondary server, using a secondary name, and be able to mount
stores on it. The process is basically the same as what you need to do
manually, but the EXE does it for you. Plus, if it goes south, NSI
support will help you fix it, as it's their app that broke it.
The only Microsoft *supported* way for HA is using clustering, as far as
I know.

All that sounds unsupported to me.

Subject: Exchange HA/DR
We will be moving from an Exchange 5.5 environment (single server) to an
Exchange 2003 environment. We basically have two locations. What we are
thinking of doing is setting up an E2003 server in both locations and
having the mailboxes from each location stored on that respective
server---in other words, the companies mailboxes will be split between
the two servers. We are considering Legato Replisore to replicate
Exchange databases to opposite locations. The question is, how do we
mount the replicated Exchange store on the remote exchange server. Keep
in mind the server will have a different name. The vendor is telling us
the only option is to build a machine from scratch , name it the same
name as the original server and mount the database. This will take some
time. We posed the question of having a machine with a temporary name
like "exchange-DR" and rename it when it becomes necessary. The vendor
told us it was not really possible to rename an Exchange server once
Exchange was set up.
Having said all this, is there any way to accomplish this. Should we be
going about it a different way?
Many Thanks
