The arguments for or against Out of Office haven't changed since Exchange 4.0.
To have it go to internal users only, simply configure the Internet Mail Service to not send Out of Office responses to the Internet. If you allow it to the Internet, you can avoid sending to discussion lists by subscribing a public folder to those lists instead of your own mailbox. If you want to post as you, then subscribe with a "no mail" option if that is available. GUI-based customizable Out of Office, NDR and overlimit messages is something we've been asking for for over eleven years. I commend your stand against allowing automatic forwards and replies to the Internet. Thanks all for the replies. Until early next year we're still on 5.5 SP4 (plus rollups) if that makes any significant difference? I guess I'm a pretty good example of the sort of user where I'd have potential "issues" with allowing Internet OoO. I'm an admin so I'm subscribed to a bunch of mailing lists that only I need (hence I'm subscribed and not a PD), some of which just don't appreciate OoO replies. I also get a bit of spam even after all our anti-spam checks are done, but it is all tagged in the subject line. I also get a shed load of upgrade/security/new product release type emails. Basically I would want to be able to put on an OoO message, but really just have it go to internal users as the amount of business related, "personal to me" email is minimal compared to the background noise I get sent. I might be missing something obvious here, but I don't see any way to do that by customizing what messages OoO replies to? I really don't want to enable internet rules as they do seem like one sure-fire way to get mail loops. cheers, Paul > -----Original Message----- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Dean > Cunningham > Sent: 24 October 2005 22:46 > To: Exchange Discussions > Subject: RE: Making OoO Safer > > > The only risky thing about OoO is the content people put in their OoO > and potential spam target confirmation. > There is no mail loop issues etc. > Probably at the moment people could put a default rule in place to > reply for all messages (which could cause a mail loop). > At least using OoO would limit the dumb behaviour mentioned above. > Using an anti spam gateway would limit the spam messages that would > get through for the OoO to trigger on.
