If you don't something discovered, you must have a properly enforced records
retention policy, and all copies destroyed.  Printing e-mail makes the
printed e-mail discoverable.

Organizations that act ethically don't need to be afraid of discovery.  I
believe that organizations that force deletion of e-mail will end up with
more problems than they solve.  For example, a malcontent presents evidence
against the organization that they retained in violation of the retention
policy, which the organization cannot refute because it destroyed all the
evidence in its favor.

Well this is goverment so of course its stupid!

So how is it done out in the world, not everyone has fancy archiving
solutions and I know one of the trends is to shorten retention time to limit
the possibility of discovery.
