Paul

I've done dozens of MSWs, and they really are a PITA. They disrupt the users
quite extensively.

I'm not sure I've ever done a MSW with other recipient containers, but I'm
pretty sure you get the recipient containers preserved, and moved to the new
site - there's no way to instruct the utility to move the mailboxes to a
different container when you run it.

MS do insist that a recreation of all MAPI profiles is necessary, but it isn't.
Most users will work quite happily if you simply remove and re-enter the
server name in the Exchange Server service in the profile, and redo the
Checknames. [This is necessary because although the server name doesn't
change, the profile still 'sees' the server at its old pre-move location, and
can't re-resolve it unless you remove the name and add it again - then it
resolves against the updated Dir and all is well]. You could craft a few
screenshots on how to do this, and send them out to people in advance - make
sure they know to print these instructions out, so that they can self-correct
their own profiles after the move happens. We've done at least two moves with
fairly large user populations on that approach, and around 70-80% of users
seems to manage to do this okay.

MSW breaks inbox rules, and things like permissions and delegate access. So
the bog-standard joe user will probably be okay, the people that make all the
noise post-MSW are the secretary-type power users with delegates and rules that
end up screwed. So you might want to audit their setup in advance so that it
can more easily be recreated.

Laptop (offline) users too are pretty screwed by MSW, they need to have their
mailbox synched in advance of the move AND THEN NOT DO ANY MORE OFFLINE WORK.
Best for a laptop user to then have a new profile after the MSW, and recreate
the offline synch/ost file.

Let me know if you need any more advice.

Briefly, a lot to read and little time today - I have a hell of a lot to
read :-)

I recall it suggested they need re-creating, or if you're lucky just to be
re-validated and the Outlook bar reset.

That's why I'm torn between the 2003 consolidation features and the 5.5 MSW
- for a small single server like ours with some mailboxes and no connectors
the MSW seems a simple option to get the sites merged, but there's so little
practical info that I can find about it outside of the readme - you'd think
Microsoft made it and nobody ever used it.
