Mine is setup with 2 routing groups with routing group connectors
between them. Each site has it's own internet, and there is a T1 PTP to
connect the 2 sites. All outbound mail goes out the respective sites
SMTP Connector. All inbound mail comes in through 1 site and goes
across the RGC to the other site as necessary.

When I lost internet access at one of the sites, I reworked the
connectors so all outbound mail flowed through the site with internet
still. This also happened to be the site that inbound mail comes in.
So, even though one of the sites had no internet access, they still had
complete e-mail flow, which is a very nice feature to doing separate
routing groups in this type of setup.

It all depends on how you configure things.

If you name the two e-mail domains the same, you won't be able to
control inbound mail to the two sites. It'll have to go to one of them,
or be round-robin randomly directed to each. You might want to retain
separate domains for the two sites as the recipients' reply addresses
and apply a unified e-mail address as a secondary. That way you can
retain the benefits of both systems. If you don't care that all inbound
mail goes through one of the two sites, then it doesn't matter if you
use the same e-mail domain.

the 2 routing groups will route each users mail to the appropriate
server right?

Each site does have it's own internet connection as well. Let me guess,
in the event that site A goes down, and can't receive e-mail from the
outside world, site B of course won't also? Does anyone have any good
KB's on this kind of setup where u introduce a second exchange server in
a other location? The problem I have here is I've been waiting for a
damn domain name for like 2 weeks, and my users are dying for
e-mail.......

We initially setup site B as a windows 2003 domain on it's own, with
it's own internet feed, and exchange servers, and DC's. But, we're
looking to rethink this strategy because we don't see a light at the end
of the tunnel.
Buerocracy stuff.......

We're looking to rename the domain in site b to the same domain name in
site A, I've downloaded the tools for that, and then link up to the 2
sites in 1 forest, and have the 2 physical locations act as one big
domain, with multiple domain controllers at each site, with replication
and stuiff like that, including the idea of adding a second exchange box
at locatgion b and adding the users mailboxes to that server so they
don't have to go over the link. Anyone ever set something up like this?
What kind of implications if any might there be if I rename the domain
name?
I'm not worried about the exchange box already in place at site B, i'll
just remove it from existing domain, and rebuild. I've never actually
setup one big forest with 2 seperate locations, and 2 exchange boxes at
each side....

Thanks

Paul

However, you might want two routing groups if both sites have their own
Internet connections and you don't want Internet traffic routed over the
inter-site link.

In the case of a 2mb connection between the two sites you don't need to
have two routing groups. Microsoft considers anything over 256mb to be a
"well-connected" site. You can leave the standard single routing group
if you really have that 2mb pipe.
This will make it a piece of cake. Just install another exchange 2003
server at that remote site, and then either move the mailboxes for these
users to that site if they are already in Exchange, or create their
mailboxes on the new server. Good luck! :-)

There probably is, but it was pretty issue for me to figure out on my
own.
I created 2 routing groups and assigned the servers from each site as
members to that routing group.

In each group I created a routing group connector. On the general tab
specify which routing group that connector will connect with (your
opposite routing group obviously) and you can specify individually the
server that can send mail over the routing group connector, or leave it
to "any local server".

On the remote bridgehead tab in the connector, specify the opposite
server.
I think that would cover everything.

SUPER......

Scenario b sounds like what I'm looking 4. Is there any kb out there on
the
2 site exchange setup with the connectors?

There are a couple of ways to handle it. You can setup Exchange(RPC)
over HTTP and let the users is location B connect to the servers in
location A via that method. No need for additional hardware, and as
long as you have Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003, it's easy to do.

You can setup a second sever in location B which holds the mailboxes of
users in location B, keeping all their mail itself local. Setup routing
group connectors between servers in A and B so they can communicate.

Subject: RE: POSSIBLE SETUP FOR EXCHANGE OVER WAN?

Hey Guys,

I know I've asked this before I think, but I was not to sure about the
answer. I'm running an exchange 2003 server in location A, but would
like my clients in location B to access it as well. There is a 2 MB
link between them. Is there such a scenario where I can setup 2
exchange boxes on each location, and have data replicate or move between
them, or control traffic between users in location A & B? I heard
something about adding another exchange server to my existing
organization, and I'm guessing I will just have to point users the
respective server in their physical location?

Thanks

Paul
