Oh well, one implication that occured not long after I made this post was the server blue screened and then the Information store would not start. So..
After going through the event log this time, we started getting the symptoms described in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/219419/en-us We moved the disks and raid controller to another box that has been running stable for a while, as the machine we suspect was faulty (it blue screened a few times trying to backup the exchsrvr folders to tape). Its now been running stable overnight while the defrag and other things take place, so hopefully the above article will get us working again with most of the data still in tact. If not, I think we would have to fall back to yesterdays tape and miss one days data (circular logging enabled).
