True would still need the gateway though just for the open port. When we were doing some premigration testing on our last upgrade we opened 25 for 2 days to test the new server and were getting over 10k spam messages per hour from Taiwan and Korea within 24 hours.

They would definitely not want to expose their SBS server to the internet so they would need a gateway server of some sort including, hardware, OS, and software. I have recommended upgrading the firewall anyway but they currently don't have any published DNS records pointing at their office.
