We also have been using it for at least a few years, but we set the limits
to 800 for faculty/staff and 130 for students.

Article needs to be updated.  I have the setting in place here, works
great.  Our students are restricted to 25 total TO + CC + BCC and
Faculty-Staff are restricted to 100.  AD based DL's count as one
recpient.  Personal Distribution Lists count each member.

Haven't test, but not sure this is a valid workaround.
