Apologies, It also occurred with a message sent to an older (existing ) recipient, the one coincidence is that they occurred in the same time frame (within one hour each other)

User thinks that the email goes to one alias, but actually it is picked up by another mailbox or routed to somewhere else due to the conflicts in names and addresses. Also check email rewrite rules and send connectors especially if you upgraded from some earlier legacy systems. They may all contribute to routing delays.
