The OST/PST file (essentially the same thing used in different ways) was never 
intended for multiple, simultaneous access. I was part of thT discussion back 
in the day when the decision was made and I know the architecture has not 
changed. 

Short version: you're correct in your surmise. Also, roaming profile = bad 
IMHO.
