I can't tell you "it won't work" - because I don't know.

I can tell you that it is an unsupported change.

I suspect (no warranties, express or implied, are given by this statement :) ) 
that it would work.

  We have to leave the server and mailbox as "untouched" as possible.
Exporting it and/or deleting things are strictly out-of-the-question.
We are under scrutiny by entities who want things to be as "as you found them" 
as possible, and I have to do what they say.  (I don't find it an unreasonable 
request, either.)

  Can we change the legacyExchangeDN for JSMITH to something else, and then 
change the legacyExchangeDN for JSMITH2 to match what JSMITH used to be?  I 
expect the answer is "no"[1], but man, this is an annoying limitation.  :-(
