In fact, the server name is NOT changed. The SITE name is changed though as
the databases are modified to reflect the new SITE location. I have done a
couple of these moves using the Move Server Wizard (same domain in one case
and different domains in the other). If you've read the Move Server Wizard
documentation and follow it's instructions you should have no problem. The
key point, as I see it, is to disconnect the site/server (Site/X.400 and DR
Connectors)you are moving from the rest of the ORG. As long as the two
sites could communicate before the move you should be good to go.
You are correct about the Outlook/Exchange client side. Each client has a
profile pointing to the original Site/Server address. The only thing I had
to do here was make sure the users knew to do the "Check Name" routine after
the move and replication had occurred. I did encounter one other problem
where users had added Public Folder shortcuts to their Outlook Bar and after
the move they had to have their permissions re-established, but that was
relatively easy to fix.

Subject: RE: Move Server questions
I thought Ed already replied? I've been on the desktop side of the house
for one server move, 5 years ago, and we are still on the same (annoying)
cluster so I haven't done this on the LAN side at all. We did NOT have to
recreate any profiles except for one bozo who tried to dial up 2 years later
and lo and behold the server was gone by then.
Are you following Ed's Method?

Subject: RE: Move Server questions
What, not a single person on this list has used the Move Server wizard? Is
Ed on vacation this week? I haven't seen any posts from him; he usually
responds to my inquiries. Lori, Daniel, Missy, Martin, Bueller, Bueller,
Bueller?

Subject: Move Server questions
I will performing my first Move Server Wizard (multi-server site to
multi-server site)in the next month or so and I have a couple questions. I
was reading some TechNet docs and one of them specifically talks about
moving from site to site. The author says that the client won't have to
recreate their profile because the server name isn't changing. But in my
lab tests this was not the case; Outlook was unable to connect and gave some
warning about the mailbox being unavailable. I redid the Check Name in the
profile and then it was fine, but it still required manual intervention. I
read in another doc somewhere that you WOULD have to recreate the profile.
Does anyone know for sure?
Also, the same TechNet article recommends removing the Site and DR
connectors. I don't want to do that because then I would lose all of my
inter-site members in each DL, not to mention lots of NDRs, etc. But I read
another article that said to leave the connectors intact (but obviously not
hosted on the server being moved). My lab tests worked fine with the
connectors left in place. Why would he be recommending to do that in the
first place?
Comments, complaints, suggestions?
Scott.
