Configure your remote users to use OST's, then train them to start Outlook
in OFFLINE mode. Configure Outlook to synchronize every 30 minutes. If
your user doesn't want to wait 30 minutes to check for new mail, train them
to hit the F9 key to have Outlook immediately start a sync.

Viola! When the 4 MB e-mail message shows up in the user's inbox, it has
already been synchronized. Since Outlook is running in Offline mode, it
will read the message from the OST file instead of the server.

Works like a charm. I use this method with my users who are in small remote
offices connecting in via DSL/VPN.

As an added bonus--the people that refuse to be trained are the ones who
have to suffer with slow mail. Usually, it's the other way around--the rest
of us have to be punished by those who don't RTFM.

Drawbacks include
=================
o The only "major" drawback I've found is that when a user schedules a
meeting, they are not able to view the free/busy times of other people as
Outlook is in offline mode. Solution is to either forget about using the
free/busy information or quit/restart Outlook in Connect mode in order to
schedule the meeting.

o When a user hits "Send" on a message, it will sit in the Outbox until the
next time Outlook syncs or the user hits F9.

Hope this helps,

-Mike

The problem that i have is that .ost files only seem to store the mail
locally, not the attachment. Yes, yes... I know that users should save
attachments etc, but they don't. Then they complain when the 4Mb powerpoint
files takes an age to open while it downloads over the 256K link. Even 512K
is too slow. Is there any way of getting the attachments to be stored
locally also?

Use OSTs. As long as the Exchange server is backed up, you have a back up
so no need to backup the OST separately.
