Nothing unusual in the transaction logs. Just normal activity before and after the crash. I have about 500 meg in transactions logs so far today (pretty normal). I do a full backup every night which clears them out.

If there's no indication of problems with the disk, try checking the transaction logs to see if a large number of logs were generated in a short period of time corresponding to the hang. I've seen instances where 5.5 SP4 servers become unresponsive to clients as a result of someone attempting to send a *huge* attachment (500Mb+) and it bogged down the server. If this does prove to be the case then consider implementing internal message size limits. Our exchange 5.5 server with sp4 installed just froze up. It was not responding to outlook clients and the cursor was not responsive. I had to resort to the reset button to restart it. Is is possible that a malformed mail message could have caused this? Is there a post SP4 patch that might help? This server has never locked up like this in the last 2 years, and nothing has changed recently.
