Sounds right to me. We have ten or so sites and initially all Connection
Agreements (covering all ten sites) attached to just one Exchange 55 Server
in the main hub site. Obviously 9 out of the 10 CAs could only be one-way
agreements but it worked just fine. The E2K users in the main hub site/AG
could see everyone in their GAL and send to/from them without an issue.

That is what I said. But I haven't tried it myself, so I don't know for
sure that it would work. But I don't know why it wouldn't work.

Did I misread--if the early adopter site keeps one 5.5 server, and keeps an
ADC to that, and that 5.5 server keeps a directory replication connection to
the non-AD site--the goal is that clients in the AD site be able to see the
other (non-ad) site mailboxes in their directory.

I could be wrong on this because I haven't researched your particular
example, but I believe that as long as they have one Exchange 5.5 server in
their site, you can maintain Directory Replication Connectors with that
server. So that early adopter site would maintain an ADC between their new
Exchange 2000 administrative group and that Exchange 5.5 server.

I have the current situation:

two domains, one org. exchange 5.5 sp4. Multiple sites, some connected via
IMS Connected Site with directory replication connection over vpn. At
present the vpn only allows smtp traffic. Each side can control only their
own mailboxes (which is fine).

One domain in one country is beginning planning for a migration to AD and
E2k, anticipating but not requiring the other countries to do the same, so
there will be placeholders in the design for them.

It appears we need AD connection agreements with each site, but it doesn't
appear that this can run over smtp. Without that, am I correct in thinking
that AD will see only the 5.5 users from sites with an ADC? And as we
migrate to E2k, the outlook clients on will use AD as the directory, rather
than the 5.5 DS?

Is there a way around without requiring opening the VPN?
