Well, I think we all agree that experience is important. Common sense also
helps. Lots of folks out there with all sorts of letters after their names
that are bloomin' idiots (not just IT, look at PHD, MD, MA, MBA!) But I
have learned a lot of stuff doing my certifications that I might not have
picked up "on the job".

But, a very important part of a job is working in the system. Not operating
system, the company system. For example, if I'm a really good employee
(which I am) and work hard (which I do) and figure out some ways to save the
company money and also be more productive --- my boss wants to give me a
raise! But, how to justify it to the bean counters????

How about -- Company pays for me to go to some classes (where you don't
just memorize, but get to meet other folks with different experience and
stuff). I get a week off here and there and get to go learn about more
stuff. That's a bonus for me!

Much easier to explain to bean counters: He went to classes to learn more
stuff. One way we know he learned stuff was he passed these tests and is
now officially an xxx or yyy. He is worth more to our company now.

Bean counters can now justify to board of directors, I get raise!

Now how many of us work in situations like this???

Certs aren't the end-all, they MAY not mean much, but anything that helps
the boss pay me more is a good thing!

I agree with the last 2 statements. Been in the industry for 20 plus years
and have to say no I have Certs. but have always risen to the level of so
called MCSE's. Not that they are bad but come on, how can someone is good at
passing tests be good at handling pressure moments. That is the true test of
a IT professional. As far as IT hiring firms. They for the most are F-cked
up and so are the company's HR departments. They look at Cert's and not a
person background and accomplishments. Yes Certs are good for truck drivers
changing jobs.
