Exchange was written from the ground up by Microsoft. It was a complete
break from the file system based, individual mailbox product that was MS
Mail. With MS Mail, it didn't matter what file system you ran it on, an
administrator could have loaded MS Mail on a unix box with AFS, as long as
the clients could connect to the unix box with AFS, or some other compatible
network connection.

Processes to move mail from one postoffice to another; "MTA" and "GATEWAY"
and "Directory Sync" functions were all provided by outside computers,
rather than processes on the server. The Postoffice Server was a misnomer.
It didn't "process" anything, just served as a repository for files.

I guess the relationship is that MS Mail is a child of Network Courier
abducted then adopted by Microsoft, while Exchange is a child of Microsoft.

Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated until defeat has been
accepted as a reality. To me, defeat in anything is merely temporary, and
its punishment is but an urge for me to greater effort to achieve my goal.
Defeat simply tells me that something is wrong in my doing; it is a path
leading to success and truth. --Bruce Lee

Thanks John, I guess my question is regarding the relationship of Network
Courier, MS Mail and Exchange.

Did Exchange start off as MS Mail, or as Network Courier?

TIA
