Lookout is an actual mail related application. Are your users using it, or
is that an attempt at humor?

Shared stores = Storing the users mailbox data in the Exchange database?
Yes, unless you want to use a 3rd party application to share contact/
calendar data... In which case you don't really need Exchange.

SMTP I'd imagine. But with 50 users, my migration plan would involve a
coexistence period of 1/18th of a second.

Using your plan? Yes, it would if we're talking about SMTP addresses
(there's more than 1 type of e-mail address). It'll also open a number of
interesting issues around where mail should be delivered since Exchange is a
messaging server which provides some groupware functionality.

IMHO, it's best to get the Exchange server up and running, test it and then
migrate everyone at once. Coexistence in such a small environment is way
more hassle than its worth.... Especially when no one actually migrates to
Exchange until stage 2.
