Exchange has the ability to do authenticated relay, but if you use the IIS
smtp service instead, you'll avoid all cost and exchange routing issues,
because you'll only have 1 route as far as exchange is concerned.

To turn on relay for the IMS go to the routing tab, click the Routing
Restrictions tab and check "hosts and clients that sucessfully authenticate"
Then the clients will have to specify in their client software to
authenticate to their outgoing mail server, but IMO it beats the heck out of
an unpublished open relay.

yes sir, you are correct sir.

i do havve a open non published relay, this was the suggested way to go
per this list about 2 years ago. Its a weird setup, i know. Stupid
mobile users, we dont need sales reps do we?

you mentioned "Authenticated Relay", wow that sounds yummy. is this
something i would need a iis smtp service for or does Exchange have the
ability to do "authenticated relay"?

much thanks for the feedback people!
