You don't have to worry about it with the personal folder backup:

http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/pfbackup.aspx

It will synchronize whenever you like it. For some of our mobile users
that require it I set it up for when they close down outlook.

Yes, that will work but since .pst files (and a few others) won't
synchronize, the user gets an error message when the synchronization is
done. I warn them that will happen, but, you know, it shouldn't. They
also have to wait until the synchronization is complete, acknowledge it
and then they can continue the shutdown process.

Maybe I'm just worried about nothing, but you know how it is. User loses
something and as a network administrator, you feel guilty that you could
have done more for them, right, right...we feel guilty???

Why can't you just go into Autoarchive and "browse" to My Documents?
Won't that set the path? (We rarely use it so that's why the ?)

What is the generally recommended procedure of backing up .pst files,
particularly the archive.pst file?

Of course Outlook puts archive.pst on the local drive. If you put it in
the "My Documents" folder (mapped to the network), when the user synchs
the file on logout they get the WARNING DID NOT SYNCHRONIZE .PST FILE!
(or something like that which will freak out all but the stouthearted).
They cannot leave their computer until the synchronization finishes.

Since the archive is, in effect, saving space in the IS by moving those
files to a separate folder, losing the archive could be pretty bad?

Is archiving Outlook files not the thing to do? Should that be turned
off on all users and just let the IS swell to whatever it gets to?

Should I create a logoff script to backup the .pst files to a separate
network share?

Thanks,
