Let us know what worked. I have worked with your same situation years ago and couldn't get it to work. We ended up installing Exchange to join the one Org. It was easy since it was only a dozen or so mailboxes. Yes Public folders and everythingg else worked, but like you had problem with the GAL's replicating.
