I am having some problems locating documentation that shows what the limit of the ESE is for backups. What little I can find says that the ESE can only put out about 25-30 GB/hr (~500 MB/min). Can anyone tell me:
* What IS the limit of the ESE to provide data (assuming that hardware is not the limiting factor) * Is the "ESE limit" for all storage groups (if backing up in parallel) or a limit on each backup session If 500 MB/min is the limit of Exchange, then it really makes the issue of "unlimited stores" a mute issue as you can only keep as much data on a server as can be backed up in the backup window. As an example: 3000 # of Users 102 Average Size of mailbox (MB) 300 gb 307200 mb 8 Backup Window in Hours 480 Backup Window in Minutes 1 Number of Exchange servers 640 # of MB/min required to backup Exchange 640 MB/min is "above" the 500 MB/min cut off. So, technically you could not have a single server with 3,000 users, with 100mb mailboxes and still back it up in 8 hours or less. Any comments? The Exchange server has 16Gb of stores on a PIII 600 with 768Mb RAM and Raid 1 data disks. The backup server is a PIII 450. When we were using single-drive DLT, I was lucky to get 200Mb/min, even with decent drivers. We changed to using removeable disks as backup media (basically using disks as tapes) and the speeds shot up although the rest of the setup remained the same.
