Hello,

E2K , Single SG, 4 DBs + PF DB, Databases on Raid5 JBOD, LTO Ultrium on
local SCSI, NT Backup

I've been moving to a new server recently and getting over 2GB /min. on
the DBs:

Backup Type: Normal

Backup started on 10/6/2003 at 12:58 PM.
Backup completed on 10/6/2003 at 1:11 PM.
Directories: 7
Files: 18
Bytes: 36,855,126,586
Time: 13 minutes and 36 seconds

Ben -

The 25GB/hr or ~500MB/min limit is what I pulled from Microsoft (though
the references are not detailed, hence the question) so I presumed it to
be correct. Here is one link that states "Hardware compression on the
tape device boosts backup speeds. For example, the maximum speed you can
write to a digital linear tape 35/70 GB equates to around 20 GB per
hour. A typical Exchange database can usually be backed up at 25 to 30
GB per hour, although the physical speed of writing to the tape remains
the same (20 GB per hour). The device is able to accept data at a faster
rate and compress it into a 20-GB-per-hour stream to the tape.":

>From Dell there is something simular "Exchange 2000 will reduce
throughput, since the average backup/restore application programming
interface (API) throughput is approximately 32 GB/hour because of the
Extensible Storage Engine (ESE).":

Could you give me more details of what "850 MB/min" is exactly? How
many SG's are you backing up?

Thanks,

I don't buy that. I am using BE 9.0 and I get throughput of ~850MB/min
- across the wire. That would theoretically allow me to back up 400GB
in 8 hours. My backup of a 22GB database takes 26 min.

Far and away the limiting factor will be the throughput of the SCSI card
to the backup device. The limiting factor will not be Exchange. Your
SCSI card may support U160, but the tape drive probably won't.

Factors that WILL limit backup throughput would be the type of software,
the firmware on the SCSI card and backup drives.

Keep in mind though, that when dealing with database limits, you really
can't have a database larger than what will fit on a single tape. I'm
pretty sure that the largest tapes are still SDLT 160/320. The Exchange
DB's are already compressed somewhat, so you won't get 320gb on a tape.
I'm guessing more like 240 maybe?

I am having some problems locating documentation that shows what the
limit of the ESE is for backups. What little I can find says that the
ESE can only put out about 25-30 GB/hr (~500 MB/min). Can anyone tell
me:

* What IS the limit of the ESE to provide data (assuming that hardware
is not the limiting factor)
* Is the "ESE limit" for all storage groups (if backing up in parallel)
or a limit on each backup session

If 500 MB/min is the limit of Exchange, then it really makes the issue
of "unlimited stores" a mute issue as you can only keep as much data on
a server as can be backed up in the backup window. As an example:

3000 # of Users
102 Average Size of mailbox (MB)
300 gb
307200 mb
8 Backup Window in Hours
480 Backup Window in Minutes
1 Number of Exchange servers
640 # of MB/min required to backup Exchange

640 MB/min is "above" the 500 MB/min cut off. So, technically you could
not have a single server with 3,000 users, with 100mb mailboxes and
still back it up in 8 hours or less.

Any comments?

David

Some observations:

I now get 550Mb/min using BackupExec 8.6 against Exchange 2K (store
backup, not BLB) - perhaps the limiting factor is the 100MBit net card.

The Exchange server has 16Gb of stores on a PIII 600 with 768Mb RAM and
Raid 1 data disks. The backup server is a PIII 450.

When we were using single-drive DLT, I was lucky to get 200Mb/min, even
with decent drivers. We changed to using removeable disks as backup
media (basically using disks as tapes) and the speeds shot up although
the rest of the setup remained the same.

All the best,

Andy
