AD is required to run Exchange 2000. AD is not a requirement to run Windows 2000. I'll suppose I'll even mention that AD only runs on Windows 2000 just in case.

Exchange 2000 requires AD because the directory information that used to be in 5.5 is now AD. In order to run the Active Directory Connector, you need Exchange 5.5 SP3 or higher due to the schema changes.

Well you learn something new everyday. I didn't know that AD was a REQUIREMENT to run 2k. I guess that answers my coworkers' question as to why I have not upgraded to 2k. My answer was always, "I don't upgrade just to upgrade." Now I have 2 answers!

I never really worked on 5.5. But I do know you need AD(active directory) installed before you can even think about installing exchange 2k

Really? I have never heard that.

Why is upgrading to SP3 such a problem? I insist on mine running SP4. I reinstall the SP every time a change is made as well.

All:
We are a small business, 1 exchange server/PDC and 1 BDC all NT4 at this
point We are slowly moving to win 2000 and our first task is to upgrade to
exchange 2000 on a new machine from exchange 5.5 (on nt4 sp6).I have read
you need to be on sp3 of exchange 5.5 in order to migrate. Is this true
and if so can anyone tell me why? This just adds another complication to
the process which I really dont need.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Dennis
