Appropriate mailbox sizes are completely dependent (IMHO) against your performance objectives and recovery-time objectives.
For example, if 1 GB mailboxes allow adequate performance but push your RTO to six hours, and that isn't acceptable to your business, then you have to shrink'em. Regards, Michael B.
