Its just come to light, that it's a know issue with the system that's in
place. When its working too hard emails get missed/not sent.
So, that's Exchange, SMTP gateway off the hook and the issue is outside
my area of control i.e....not my problem :-)

Someone will have had to rewrite the IMAP protocol to achieve that!

John - check out the SMTP logs on the UNIX box first to make sure it's
actually trying to send mail to your Exchange server.

Ignore IMAP.

Probably not because I would be really really surprised if IMAP was
being used to send email.
