However usually you need a rapport with either the consulting company you would be working for or with the actual customer who would be willing to hire someone to work entirely remotely. I am familiar with several large financial firms that have a distributed workforce, and most of the staff do not report regularly to an office building. Many live 2-4 hours from the primary office site and either come onsite once every few weeks or not at all except for large meetings.
