As for the kernel call, I have no idea, but the kernel version is the only difference between Debian Lenny machines where this happens (in all it's infrequency) and not. Also the 4.69 backport on Debian Etch machines (but of course here we have all different library versions as well) does not exhibit this problem and they all run nothing newer than 2.6.24 kernels.
