This depends on the implementation.
I have a directorystructure like this:

/srv/imapd/srv/%USER%/maildir

The file .forward is placed directly under %USER% and is automaticly
generated with a python script from LDAP Data for each user. No user
need to update this file directly and normaly there can't be an error
because i generate the complete filterstructure at this script (there
can be errors i saw last weeks :-( ).

But now back to the original question.... where is the big difference
beween both ways to generate vacation emails?
especially if the .forward file is automatically generated?
