ISTR it has recently come 'out' of the default, perhapa because quite a 
number of things once reliant on it now have built-in equivalents.

Most posts here seem to show use of perl for apecial cases of regular 
expression parsing (a particular strength of perl), header re-writing, 
complex lookups and branching, statistics accumultation, analysis, and 
re-use, decision support, et al.

I've seen a number of useful-looking things done with it - but have yet 
to need any of them here (aside from SpamAssassin being written in perl, 
of course..).
