i looked (briefly) at compiling 4.77 , but the stunnel bit is working
OK. its TLS that isnt.
Its doing the server lookup. How do i tell it to use the
username/password from the lookup file ?

As of Exim 4.77, you can set the SMTP driver's protocol option to
"smtps" for SSL-on-connect, which should let you remove stunnel from the
equation and have a simpler configuration.
