The server advertises, in the EHLO response, which in Gmail's case will currently ordinarily be: 250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN XOAUTH In your exim.conf, in the "begin authenticators" section, you should have an authenticator with "public_name = PLAIN". If that authenticator has both a client_name and a client_secret setting, it will be used.
