Keep yer old gnarly 'cannot be upgraded' stuff in the image of wot you
have now, and put a new, clean, cohesive - and also free - install onto
another image so you can get on with life.
Or make it the 'host'.
Any half-way modern hardware - and I'm talking about roughly $70 - $120
for an AMD Fusion or low-end Intel dual-core econ-board, even a
single-core with hyerthreading - not two thousand bucks - will run the
old software faster than it originally did on bare metal ... and save
back its cost on air-con and power bills even before it wears out its
CPU fan.
End of problem.
